"Obedience Brings Blessings"

Deuteronomy 7:12-26

Everyone wants their life to be blessed, but unfortunately not everyone wants blessings in God.

The Lord promised to love, bless, and make the Israelites many (13). The Lord will bless them with abundant produce and keep them from sickness and their enemies (15). For this reason, they must not worship the gods of foreign nations.

God will also fight against the enemies of the nation of Israel. Although the nations they will face are far more, powerful, and mighty, but God Himself will dispel them. The Israelites need not fear and fear because God will give them victory (17-24). For this reason, they must also exterminate all the statues of the nations' offerings. The Israelites were not to bring abominations into their homes (25-26).

If God's people hear and do God's rules, then God will bless them. When they have received blessings and victories, they must guard against following other gods and not to be attracted by their offerings. So, God would bless the Israelites if they continued to worship God.

Our reading today shows God's promise to His people. A blessed life will happen if His people live in obedience. So, blessings from God are inseparable from obedience and faithfulness to God. Nor should we expect blessings from sources outside of God. Let us not ask God for blessings without longing to be more obedient to Him. For us, God's blessing is given so that we know Him better and be more faithful to Him.

Do we expect certain blessings from the Lord these days? Is that desire accompanied by a longing to be more obedient to God? Ask the Lord for blessings with a determination to always be faithful to Him. Obey and be faithful to God!
