Suggested Products for Traveling

By Paxton Hutchens

In this article, I have decided to highlight a few products and services for you that I never travel without:

Suitcase: My favorite brand of suitcase is Samsonite. Mine have held up very well during my travels. When my family moved to japan we went with 14 of these suitcases in tow and we still have them to do this day. Airlines can be rough on luggage so it's important to have a bag that is going to hold up after being thrown around a little bit. They also come in a variety of sizes which can be helpful depending on how long your trip is and how much you are packing. The outside pockets are also nice to store things you need easier access to like a jacket so you don't have to carry it around.

Airlines: My favorite airline is Lufthansa. I have a previous blog post written about it explain why I enjoy traveling with this airline so much. They have been some of the most comfortable flights I have experienced and the service is amazing. The airline I most commonly fly is United. I have a been a member of the airline since I was ten. I have used my frequent flyer miles for trips and it's an easy, painless process and the rewards are nice. Being a member, you get access to the lounges in the airports. This is nice because it's somewhere else to go and sit in during layovers instead of at the crowded gate. The lounge is also nice because it has food and nicer bathrooms (who can complain about that). United has always had very convenient flights for me. They have always flown to the destinations I want to go to and they usually have options for flight times. I've never had an issue with connecting flights either. No airline is perfect and flying can be a pain but I have had great experience with both Lufthansa and United.

Travelmate memory foam neck pillow: Neck pillows are amazing for traveling. Some trips can be long and traveling is tiring. Having one of these can help you get some sleep when you are waiting during long layovers or even on the plane. It's great neck support for trying to sleep on planes and in chairs when you can't lay down. Wanting to sleep and not being able to is one of the most frustrating parts about traveling. These are comfortable and come in different colors to make them even more fun. They can also hook right on to your bags so you don't have to carry them separately and avoid the risk of losing them.

Choosing Your Destination

Choosing Your Destination

By Paxton Hutchens

Once you have decided you are ready to take trip, whether it is your first international trip or another you're adding to a long list of previous destinations, you will be faced with the task of deciding where you want to go. This can be a hard thing to do. The world is massive and there are so, so many different choices. I always struggle trying to decide where I would like to visit next and to be honest, sometimes the answer changes. It all just kind of depends what your interests have been in lately and what's really calling out to you. This page will list a few different techniques you can use to help you decide where you want to go next or at least help you to narrow it down.

Budget: It's always important to consider your budget. As fun and exciting as it may be, international travel does not come cheap. Make sure you have planned well in advance and have been saving for your next adventure. It's almost important to budget a little extra money for things you maybe hadn't thought about. Always make sure you can afford a few extra nights in a hotel and some extra meals just in case something doesn't go as planned. It's also important to consider your list of countries when talking about budgeting. Different parts of the world are a lot more expensive than others. You're going to spend a lot more money if you are traveling to Europe than if you are traveling to South America. Cost of living is different everywhere you go. Flights will also have different pricing depending on your destination. Make sure you think about what you will be spending money and be honest when making your budget.

Time: Time constraints are another thing to think about. How long do you want to be gone? How much time can you take off work or school? Are you traveling with others who are working with a time constraint? Consider how much time you are dealing with and plan accordingly. If you only have about 5 days I wouldn't suggest taking off to Australia. If you have a shorter period of time choose somewhere close to home with less traveling time and a smaller country that you can see more of in a small amount of time. While the nonstop exploring of traveling can be fun it it's fun to try and fit too much in too little time. Make sure you give yourself enough time to enjoy what you are doing.

Facing Your Fears While Traveling Abroad

Facing Your Fears While Traveling Abroad

By Paxton Hutchens

This page is all about solving the problem of being afraid of traveling. Fear is one of the biggest things that holds back first-time travelers from taking the leap and going to the country they've always dreamed about. I understand the fear and can relate. I was scared the fist time I ever left the country. Granted I was only ten years old and I was moving to Japan and wasn't going to be back in the states for a year. So, if ten-year-old me can do it you surely can too. This page is broken down into different fears and challenges you may face while traveling.

The fear of flying: A lot of people don't like to fly. I will admit that I am not a huge fan of it myself. I do alright on shorter trips but those long, non-stop 13 hour flights to Japan still get to me. I get nauseous, bored, and sometimes just nervous. I've found that the trick to flying is to simply just not think about it. I know this sounds kind of silly and you're probably thinking how am I supposed to do that? Don't think about how long you have to sit on the plane or the fact that you are thousands of feet in the air. Don't check the map on the screen and think too much about the flight. Use it as relaxing time. Read a book. Watch a movie. Journal. Color. Get work done if you have some. Take a nap and catch up on some sleep. Distract yourself and think of it as some down time before the fun part of the trip actually starts. Also, if you know that flying can make you nauseous, make sure you take something to help with motion sickness. This works wonders for me. I hope you are able to try a few things to help make your next flight more comfortable for you and maybe even learn to find flying exciting.

Fear of the language barrier: One of my friends is always talking about how she wants to travel but one of her main concerns that seems to hold her back is nerves about not being able to speak the local language. You would be surprised how many people around the world speak English. I have honestly found that some foreigners who speak English as a second language speak it better than we do as our first language. If a language barrier is a huge concern for you, plan your first trip to Europe or Australia or somewhere locals are more likely to know your language. This will ease you into international travel without overwhelming you and you won't have to worry about this issue as much. Once you become comfortable traveling and realize a language barrier isn't as scary as it sounds, you will learn to be more adventurous and maybe try visiting Asia on your text trip where English isn't as prevalent.

Hot Jupiter Planets: Any Way The Wind Blows

Hot Jupiter Planets: Any Way The Wind Blows

By Judith E Braffman-Miller

A generation ago, planet-hunting astronomers discovered the first exoplanets in orbit around distant stars beyond our own Sun--and these new discoveries have since provided a treasure chest filled with remarkable brave new worlds for scientists to ponder. Some of these remote planets show an almost eerie resemblance to the eight major planets in our own Solar System, while others are so exotic that they are unlike anything astronomers believed could exist--until they actually observed them. Hot Jupiter exoplanets do not resemble any of the major planets that circle our own Star, and these strange, distant, enormous, and gaseous worlds orbit their own parent-stars fast and close in roasting orbits. Although hot Jupiters bear a close resemblance to our own Solar System's banded behemoth gas-giant Jupiter, they are much closer to their parent-stars than Jupiter is to our Sun. Indeed, before their discovery, astronomers assumed that such gas-giant planets could only form far from their stars, in the outer regions of their planetary systems, where our own Jupiter is situated. In January 2018, a team of astronomers discovered yet another intriguing mystery about these bizarre gigantic worlds--the hottest region on a hot Jupiter exoplanet, closely clinging to its parent-star, isn't where astrophysicists expected it to be. This discovery challenges our scientific understanding of the numerous planets, of this exotic type, that are found in planetary systems orbiting stars beyond our own.

Unlike our Jupiter, hot Jupiters are so amazingly close to their parent-stars that it usually takes them less than three days to finish an orbit. In addition, one hemisphere of these distant worlds always faces its stellar parent, while the other face is always turned away from it, perpetually locked in darkness.

Of course, the "day" side of a hot Jupiter gets considerably hotter than the "night" side, and obviously the hottest point of all should be the region closest to the roiling, broiling star. Astrophysicists have proposed that these exoplanet "roasters" also experience powerful winds roaring eastward near their equators, which can at times displace the hot spot toward the east.

However, a mysterious hot Jupiter dubbed CoRoT-2b seems to travel to the beat of a different drummer. The hot spot on CoRoT-2b turns out to be located in the opposite direction--that is, it lies west of center. A team of astronomers at McGill University's McGill Space Institute (MSI) and the Institute for research on exoplanets (iREx) in Montreal, Canada, made this surprising discovery using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. Their findings are published in the January 22, 2018 issue of the journal Nature Astronomy.

"We've previously studied nine other hot Jupiter giant planets orbiting super close to their star. In every case, they have had winds blowing to the east, as theory would predict. But now, nature has thrown us a curveball. On this planet, the wind blows the wrong way. Since it's often the exceptions that prove the rule, we are hoping that studying this planet will help us understand what makes hot Jupiters tick," noted Dr. Nicolas Cowan in a January 22, 2018 McGill University Press Release. Dr. Cowan is a McGill astronomer, and a study co-author. He is also a researcher at MSI and iREx.

Distant "Roaster" Planets

The eight major planets of our Sun's family display a wide range of attributes. They are distinguished by two primary properties: their size and their orbit. The size of one of our Solar System's planetary denizens determines if it can have an atmosphere capable of sustaining life. The orbit affects the surface temperature and whether there could be life-loving liquid water pooling on the planet's surface. A planet that is considered to be potentially habitable not only should have liquid water on its surface, it must also be between about 80% to 200% the diameter of Earth.

The habitable zone surrounding a star is that "Goldilocks" region where the temperature is not too hot, not too cold, but just right for water to exist in its liquid phase. Liquid water is necessary to sustain life as we know it. Planets that circle their star in this "Goldilocks" region have the potential--though by no means the promise--of being inhabited by life as we know it.

Planets that are smaller than 8/10ths of an Earth-diameter, and also possess less than 50% an Earth-mass, do not have a sufficiently strong gravitational grip to hold onto a life-sustaining atmosphere. Conversely, planets that are more than twice the diameter of Earth sport about ten Earth-masses and sufficient gravity to hold onto hydrogen. Hydrogen is both the most abundant, as well as the lightest, atomic element. Such behemoth planets evolve into gas-giants like Jupiter and Saturn. Jupiter is more than ten times the diameter of our planet and over 300 times more massive.

The first exoplanet to be discovered circling a main-sequence (hydrogen burning) star, similar to our Sun, was 51 Pegasi b (51 Peg b, for short). Even though 51 Peg b has about the same mass as Jupiter, it is twenty times closer to its star than Earth is to the Sun. Jupiter is five times as far from our Sun as Earth, and it takes 12 years to orbit our Star. In sharp contrast, 51 Peg b orbits its star every 4 days.

51 Peg b was discovered in 1995 by astronomers using the radial velocity method, which was the first method used to successfully detect faraway exoplanets. The radial velocity technique spots the oscillations (wobbles) that these planets induce in the movements of their stellar parents, and the relatively large and rapid motions caused by giant, close-in planets in star-hugging orbits, are the easiest planets for astronomers to spot using this method. That is because this type of planet causes the greatest "wobble" in its parent-star. When 51 Peg b was discovered, it surprised planet-hunting astronomers because they did not think such giant, close-in, gas-laden worlds could exist.

As of January 1, 2018, there are 3,726 confirmed exoplanets in 2,792 systems, with 622 systems hosting more than one planet. There is also a population of free-floating (orphan) planets that do not belong to the family of any star at all, but instead wander as solitary worlds through interstellar space, without the compansionship of a stellar parent or planetary siblings. It is generally thought that originally these "orphan" worlds were members of a planetary system, but they were evicted from their original home as a result of the gravitational jostling of sibling planets. These sibling worlds hurled these tragic "orphans" out into the cold darkness of the space between stars, to wander alone and lost through the interstellar wilderness.

The first sign of an exoplanet beyond our Solar System was noted as early as 1917, but its true identity was not recognized at the time. The first scientific discovery of an exoplanet was in 1988. Soon afterwards, the first validated detection came in 1992.

Today, the discovery of thousands of exoplanets has become almost routine for astronomers who are on the hunt for distant worlds. The search for planets belonging to the families of remote stars, beyond our Sun, historically proved to be a difficult quest. At last, in 1992, the very first batch of genuinely bizarre exoplanets were discovered in orbit around a small, dense, and rapidly whirling stellar corpse termed a pulsar. Dr. Alexander Wolszczan of Pennsylvania State University, after carefully studying radio emissions streaming out from a compact millisecond pulsar with the drab name of PSR B1257+12, made the historic announcement that it was being circled by several extraordinarily weird small worlds. A pulsar is only about 12 miles in diameter--and it is actually the collapsed core of what was once a massive main-sequence star on the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram of Stellar Evolution. This genuinely bizarre, dense, tiny stellar relic is all that is left of a heavy star that has finished burning its necessary supply of hydrogen fuel, and has perished in the fabulous final blaze of glory that characterizes a brilliant supernova blast.

In 1995, 51 Peg b was discovered in orbit around a normal Sun-like star. This discovery was first made by Dr. Michel Mayor and Dr. Didier Queloz of Switzerland's Geneva Observatory. It was soon confirmed by a team of American planet-hunting astronomers using the Lick Observatory's three-meter telescope atop Mount Hamilton in California.

Following the historic discovery of 51 Peg b, new theories were quickly devised to explain the surprising existence of hot Jupiters. Some astronomers proposed that these strange "roasters" were actually enormous molten rocks, while others suggested that they were gas-giant planets that had been born about 100 times farther away from their parent-stars. According to the latter theory, hot Jupiters were shot back towards their roiling, broiling parent-stars as a result of near-collisions with other sibling planets--or, possibly, by the gravitational jostling of a binary stellar companion of their own star.

One proposal suggests that hot Jupiters are born much farther from their parent-star, before they make their journey inward, at a distance that is comparable to that of our Solar System's Jupiter. This is because these "roasters" gradually lose energy as a result of interactions with what is termed the protoplanetary accretion disk. This disk, composed of gas and dust, swirls around young stars, and it is the birthplace of their retinue of orbiting planets. The newborn giant planet, as a result of this interaction, spirals inward towards the searing-hot and bright inner regions of the planetary system, closer to its youthful parent-star. As a result of its unfortunate journey towards its roiling, broiling stellar parent, the baby gas-giant travels very far from its more remote birthplace, far from its star, where it is both much colder and darker.

Hot Jupiter exoplanets may be doomed behemoths, destined to undergo a very violent demise within the seething-hot furious furnaces of their glaring parent-stars. However, until they make their final, fatal plunge into their stars' churning fires, these unfortunate "roasters" orbit their stellar-parents fast and close.

Roasting hot Jupiters actually are a diverse bunch. However, they do have certain properties in common:

--Many show low densities.

--Most have circular orbits.

--By definition they all possess large masses and short orbital periods around their parent-stars.

--They are apparently more common in orbit around F-and G-type stars, but less common around K-type stars. They are usually not found circling tiny red dwarf stars. Red dwarfs are both the most abundant, as well as the smallest, true stars to populate our Milky Way Galaxy.

--Many hot Jupiters are blanketed by extreme and exotic atmospheres, resulting from their short orbital periods, relatively long days, and tidal locking.

The Strange Case Of CoRoT-2b

The strange "roaster", dubbed CoRoT-2b, was discovered a decade ago by a French-led space observatory mission. This nonconformist alien world resides 930 light-years from our planet and, even though many other hot Jupiters have been discovered in recent decades, CoRoT-2b has continued to sing a sirens' song to astronomers because of its two mysterious attributes: its bloated size and the exotic spectrum of light emissions coming from its surface.

"Both of these factors suggest there is something unusual happening in the atmosphere of this hot Jupiter," commented Lisa Dang in the January 22, 2018 McGill University Press Release. Ms. Dang, who is the lead author of the new study, is a doctoral student at McGill. By using Spitzer's Infrared Array Camera to observe the planet while it finished an orbit around its parent-star, the astronomers were able to map the planet's surface brightness for the first time. This is how its unusual westward hot spot was discovered.

The team of astronomers offer three possible explanations for the puzzling attributes of CoRoT-2b:

--The planet could be spinning so slowly that a single rotation takes longer than one full orbit of its parent-star. This slow rotation could create winds that blow toward the west rather than the east. However, this possibility could weaken theories about planet-star interactions.

--CoRoT-2b's atmosphere could be interacting with its magnetic field to modify its wind pattern. This possibility could give astronomers the rare chance to study an exoplanet's magnetic field.

--Large clouds blanketing the eastern side of CoRoT-2b might make it appear darker than it would otherwise. This possibility could challenge current models of atmospheric circulation on such planets.

Lisa Dang commented in the January 22, 2018 McGill University Press Release that "We'll need better data to shed light on the questions raised by our finding. Fortunately, the James Webb Space Telescope, scheduled to launch next year, should be capable of tackling this problem. Armed with a mirror that has 100 times the collecting power of Spitzer's, it should provide us with exquisite data like never before."

The new research is published under the title: Detection of a westward hotspot offset in the atmosphere of hot gas giant CoRoT-2b, published in the January 22, 2018 issue of Nature Astronomy. Study co-authors are Lisa Dang, Nicholas B. Cowan, and Joel C. Schwartz.

Judith E. Braffman-Miller is a writer and astronomer whose articles have been published since 1981 in various journals, newspapers, and magazines. Although she has written on a variety of topics, she particularly loves writing about astronomy because it gives her the opportunity to communicate to others the many wonders of her field. Her first book, "Wisps, Ashes, and Smoke," will be published soon.

River Cruising Versus Ocean Cruising

River Cruising Versus Ocean Cruising

By Richard D Boyce

At first, it is important to say that the river and ocean cruising experiences are entirely different but equally enjoyable. As an Australian, it is easy to access any number of ocean cruises leaving from most state capital with a wide variety of cruising lines with a large list of destinations in the Pacific and eastern Asian areas.

On the other hand, the traditional river cruising of Europe means a long plane flight before your cruise states. (It is only recently that areas in South and Eastern Asia has become river cruise destinations).

So the first considerations that must be made by an Australian wishing to cruise are the cost and time involved in both before a decision is made either or both ways.

Let me now discuss the differences and similarities between each type of cruising.

Our first ocean cruise was on a ship with 2000 plus passengers and a thousand plus crew while our first ever river cruise contained only about 180 passengers. That is the first different you notice. Then you go from a ship with fourteen decks to one with only three. The river boat was 135 metres long while the cruise ship might be up to 300 metres long.

Even though there are two or more thousand passengers travelling with you on a cruise ship, on most occasions, there is not a feeling that the ship is crowded. On the other hand, river cruise boats with less than two hundred passengers only feels crowded at the evening meal as there is only one restaurant on board. Ocean cruise ships have many dining choices.

On the river cruise, passengers are off the boat each day on organised tours as part of their cruise. So there are not any planned activities on the boat during the day. On an ocean cruise, there are many activities on the ship in which passengers may indulge, daily.

The ocean cruise provides a greater variety of entertainment from the big musical productions in the theatre to more intimate entertainment in the various bars or in the atrium. On our river cruise, we had a singer entertain us at morning tea, afternoon tea and during the evening providing us with a variety of music types to fit the time of day. As well, traditional entertainers from each country or locality came on board to give us a performance of their music.

Both types of cruising offer off boat tours that can be booked by guests with ocean cruises providing many more tour options. With the river cruise, there is something to see and do each day off the boat. Firstly there is the included, guide led tour of the city followed by a chance to wander around that city at your leisure. Some days you might visit two cities. On most ocean cruises, there will be days at sea where you can just relax or indulge in the activities provided by the ship. On a river cruise, most of the movement of the ship is carried out at night.

On a cruise ship, there are several public areas in which to sit and relax. They include bars, a library, an Internet room, pool decks and a large atrium where light refreshments are served. The river cruise boat has a lounge which includes a bar and this is where the entertainment occurs. The river cruise boat has a sun deck on the top of the boat as well.

Getting on and off the ship/boat is much easier on the river cruise simply because of the numbers of passengers involved. This means getting to do off the boat tours is easy and quick.

River cruising, because of the size of the boat and no lifts, would be extremely difficult for the disabled or elderly who find getting around difficult. The ocean cruise lines are able to do a great job looking after the disabled and elderly.

Forming new friendships is much easier on the river cruise. On the bigger cruise ships passengers are like "ships passing in the night". Even with friends on board, it is possible not to encounter them on any given day.

The great things about cruising are:
• You unpack only once;
• You don't need to spend any extra money;
• Meals and some refreshments are on tap as part of the cost of the cruise;
• Your state room is serviced each day; and
• You have many options on what to do or not to do.

The embarking process on the cruise ship can be very daunting for a first time cruiser with two thousand plus passengers trying to board the ship. Getting on our river cruise boat for the first time was a "breeze" by comparison.

Finally, it is important to say that both types of cruising have much to offer to the traveller. So I suggest that a traveller should try each at least once. You might be surprised and fall in love with the idea of cruising.

How To Control People And Circumstances

How To Control People And Circumstances

By James J Elleyby

First of all, let me point this out from the get go! The only person who you can fully control is you! You're in control over what you say, and what you do, and how you think. You're in control over where you go, and how you act. You're in control over if you do it, or if you don't do it.

Follow me closely here and pay full attention now. Because, you don't have direct control over anyone, or anything. But, you can greatly influence and manipulate people and circumstances when you know how to act, and you know what to do. For the very purposes of clarification here, you can control other people simply by controlling your own self! You can also control circumstances, again, by simply controlling your own self.

Something important to note is that physical control over a person who is capable of thinking for their own self is virtually impossible. So, don't be fooled in this department. You might be physically stronger than them, and you may even be able to slap them around for a while, but the truth is, if they have a mind and they are able to think on their own, you do not have the full control over them that you might erroneously believe. Even if you might have a slave, there is still a level of allowance that they are affording to you. You see, because the person whom you are controlling must decide to give you control in the first place. I say all of that, to say this. Brute force is a very unreliable means of controlling another person. Because, the moment you slip up, is the moment you will truly discover that you are, indeed, powerless to control anyone, except your own self!

To control a circumstance, you must understand, that the circumstance is fueled by your own energy. You created the circumstance, so therefore, you are the governor of the circumstance as well.

To control the circumstances, control yourself! Act in such a way that you would desire things to play out. Keep a taller perspective on things.

The upbeat, "pep in the step", cheerful attitude is highly attractive! Friendly, Happy, optimistic demeanors are magnetic in their very nature, because they promote the flow of wellbeing, as they portray innocence, workability, and promise.

If you could just grasp this concept in your mind, that your point of attraction originates from within you, then you would truly realize that it is you whom controls that energetic magnet which draws everything unto you!

Plenty of people won't even dare to consider you romantically if you had a poorly perceived attitude. Authorities, police officers, firefighters, judges, and even doctors will all tend to treat you based upon how you present yourself to them. In other words, if you present yourself with humility and self-love to them, then you are most likely to be treated with profound respect by them! If you present yourself to them as though you are important, then most likely, you will be treated like you are important. Your very presentation alone will encourage even the authorities to carry themselves with the highest degree of professionalism.

On the other hand, if you are going to insist on presenting yourself with an overbearing confidence, a proud character with an unbendable will, then you are most likely to be met with a vigorous force of opposition from those very same authorities! Understand, that this type of demeanor, inadvertently, directly, challenges their authority. So, it is your energy which will encourage them to act like jackasses, and to disregard all of their professional training, because you will send them into a salvage attempt to show you who the real authority is. Don't misunderstand me here. I am not telling you to be weak, to not stand up for your rights, and to allow anyone to just walk all over you. But, what I am telling you is this. You will force them to flex their muscle, if you insist on flexing your muscle.

Don't waste time or energy trying to control other people, or external circumstances. Instead, you only need to simply control your own perfect self! By taking control over your own self, you take control over the situation. If you want the situation to be calm, to be manageable, and to be pleasant, then you must be calm, you must be manageable, and you must be pleasant. This is also how you control other people as well.

Your external circumstances respond to who you are choosing to be. Even more so, everything is one big intricate collaborative sea of energy. We are all, on some level, connected to each other. So, in a sense, what you do to others, you do to yourself. What you do for others, you do for yourself. If you adopt this general principle, you will naturally foster a particular type of humility which will exalt you in just about everything that you do or say.

Let me unravel a little bit of that mystery for you, when I say that we are all, on some level, intricately connected to each other. What great forces could possibly connect us all to each other? Well, for starters, we share one great big sky! We share one great big sun! We even share this great planet together! As a collective whole, it becomes necessary for us to even operate as one being at times, be it for the sake of our own preservation, or the sake for our own entertainment. We share one common language. We don't all need to go to the same places at once, but we share roads, bridges, and tunnels! We produce a single broadcast signal, yet we need that one single signal to be able to reach many different people. Do you understand where I'm going with this? We are all connected on many different levels, including socially, spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and even physically. We must not only be mindful of this fact, but we should also be reverent, sensitive, and responsive to this very real tangible fact! We cannot live and exist alone, so for the purposes of our very existence, we should also cultivate a particular love and appreciation for this fact, as well.

Here's the real secret you've been looking for.

You don't need to control anyone! And, you don't need to control any circumstances either!

To get control, give up control! Let it all go! Because, as soon as you realize that you don't need to control anyone... as soon as you realize that the circumstances and conditions are just fine, and they don't need to be controlled.. as soon as you no longer need to be in control... guess what?

You will realize that you are in full complete control! With this type of thinking and understanding in place, nothing can ever go wrong! You see?

Because you're in complete control.

The Promise Of Tomorrow

The Promise Of Tomorrow

By James J Elleyby

Life can be grossly unpredictable at times. There just seems to be too many things that we just don't have control over. To top it off, there are just so many gruesome reports of terrible things happening to people. It doesn't seem to matter if the person is innocent, or good or bad, or big or small, but it just seems like horrible stuff can truly happen to anyone at any given time. Just embracing this type of thinking alone, is enough to encourage you to plan your own funeral!

I have a different perspective on things. In my opinion, tomorrow is absolutely promised to me. Not only do I accept this promise, but I have a ton of personal evidences that support this promise. Isn't that such an empowering way to think?

One clear form of evidence that tomorrow is promised to me is, my calendar. The calendar is, essentially, the planner for the entire year!

When I glance at my calendar, I can see all the days that are promised to me. I accept all of those days, and I boldly claim them as mine! I confidently, mark the days I am going to do something. I confidently plan what my next move is. If I wasted my time, entertaining the inferior thought about how tomorrow is not promised to me, then there would be no reason to even have a calendar.

Another clear evidence that tomorrow is promised to me, is how I feel inside. My heart is strong. My mind is strong. I have a very clear purpose in life, and I love the life I am living. The desire to stay alive is booming and throbbing, and gracefully pulsating through my veins. I eat healthy, so the blood in my body is good. My brain cells are healthy and strong, and cellular proliferation is rich within my mortal body.

I understand the concept that life is a delicate balancing act of play and work and rest. So, I play when I'm bored. I work when I'm restless. And, then I rest when I'm tired. I won't force myself to work, if I'm tired. I don't force myself to rest, if I'm restless. Because, when I'm not tired, then this energy should be put to use. It, in my opinion, produces a great dis ease to attempt to force my body to be still, when it clearly wants to be up and moving around! So, by golly! I live in my body, and my body is my oldest friend. Why not listen to him?

I understand how important it is to love myself. To fully appreciate me for who I am is the most important part of conscious existence. I mean, I know that I'm not the only person living on earth. So, it's also very important to find love and appreciation for other people too.

I understand that government is very important to have, and a responsible people should cultivate a loving and adoring relationship with their government. It's such a self-defeating, oppressive way to live in fear of a government or of an authoritative figure hanging over you. But, and this is worth noting, that when a person reaches a certain level of understanding, there is no government that can oppress them.

Another promise of tomorrow, for me that is, are the myriad of goals, dreams, hopes, aspirations, and desires that I have!

Desire, and purpose are the fuels of life. Desire keeps you going. Purpose gives you reason to keep going.

I hear stories about how this one died, and that one died, and how the other one is currently dying. I hear stories about how this can kill you, and that can kill you, and how this is bad for you and that is bad for you. On and on, I have heard all of it! Guess what? I don't accept any of it! I just let it come in through one ear and go out the other ear. I don't allow it to get into my brain, or to settle into my heart. I mean, if that one died, then good for him. But, if this one died, then, good for her. What do you want me to do about it Bring them back to life? For what? Their dead! Let them go and be in peace.

For me, life is not about suffering, and so, I don't suffer. Some people believe that life is all about suffering. They have some pretty screwed up lives! And, I say, good for them! As far as I'm concerned, they can take their pathetic, sorry ass, no joy, lost purpose, and inferior perspective lives and simply go straight directly to hell. It's a waste of time trying to save or help a person who doesn't want to be saved or helped. So, I don't bother.

Don't fix, what ain't broke. Because, if you fix what ain't broke, then you're gonna brake what is fixed! I have come to the conclusion that life is so perfect! Everything that happens is truly meant to happen. Yes it is! Because, if it wasn't meant to happen, then it wouldn't have happened. If something did not happen, then it just simply means that it wasn't supposed to happen, or it will happen at a later time.

Life is what you're willing to make of it. It's never about the quality of the hand you were dealt. But it's all about how you play that hand you were dealt. You see, because you can't do nothing about the cards that were given to you, but the only thing you can do is play them! This is a winning mindset. With this type of thinking in place, guess what? It's impossible to be dealt a losing hand, because you are a winner at heart! You can't lose, because the only option is to win!

The concept of the promise of tomorrow can be some pretty heavy stuff. It borders many religions and defies common beliefs. I tell you, this is a sensitive concept that is not accepted by everybody. I can totally appreciate that, though.

I'm not trying to convince anybody of anything. I just don't have the time, or the desire, or even the energy, to sell you the promise of tomorrow! I mean, you do what works for you, because I'm gonna do what works for me!

I'll see ya tomorrow!

Peace;

What Is a Fidelity Bond?

What Is a Fidelity Bond?

By Jeff Wolf

If you've heard the term before but aren't quite sure what it is, a good fidelity bond definition would reference the fact that it's a kind of insurance which an employer can buy to protect a business against employee theft, embezzlement, and other losses which aren't normally covered by traditional insurance. This can be in the form of blanket insurance, which covers all employees equally, or insurance which applies to specific employees in positions where access is greater to company assets, e.g. bank accounts, intellectual property, etc.

Sometimes referred to as 'honesty bonds', fidelity bonds protect a company as well as the clients of that company, from the potentially devastating losses which could occur if a strategically-placed employee were to steal from the company, or commit damaging criminal acts such as forgery, which would be harmful to a company's reputation. In the majority of cases, fidelity surety bonds are optional hedges against such criminal activity, although government regulations do require certain businesses to have such safeguards in place, so that consumers don't lose everything when a company experiences a major loss.

How do Fidelity Bonds Work?

Fidelity bonds work in much the same way as insurance does, in that under normal circumstances, they are just in the background having no impact on daily operations. Only when certain events occur does the fidelity bonding come into play, just as with an insurance policy. Of course, in the case of an insurance policy, it's usually the death of an insured person which is the triggering event that activates the policy, and causes a claim to be filed for reimbursement. With a fidelity surety bond, the triggering event occurs when some kind of loss is sustained by a company, which is directly associated with a criminal act by an employee, such as embezzlement.

A bond is not transferable between employers, nor can it accrue interest, so it cannot be considered a financial investment of any kind, but is instead merely a protection against adverse actions from employees. The cost of buying fidelity bonds is heavily tied to such factors as how many employees a company has, what kinds of protections are in place at the business, the type of coverage needed, and the amount of coverage which is needed to protect against financial loss.

Parties Involved in a Fidelity Bond

The parties involved in a fidelity bond are the employer, the employees, and a financing company which sells the fidelity bond to the employer. Since the finance company, or insurance company, stands to be liable for the amount of that fidelity bond if a claim is made, they sometimes want to set guidelines for the employer's hiring practices. Employees and their actions are of course, the focal point of the bond in the first place, so it's only natural that an insurance company would want to protect itself against undue exposure to potential criminal acts.

Then too, the terms of the bond may only stay in effect as long as specific employees remain in specific positions. This too is understandable, because in the case of scheduled fidelity bonds (which cover specific employees in high-profile positions), employees with greater access to assets that are potentially exploitable are the ones that are being insured against. If one honest employee is hired as a company accountant, but is replaced by someone who turns out to be less honest, it's easy to see why the coverage might be voided.

The Dangers Of Trump's Mixed-Messages: 5 Examples

The Dangers Of Trump's Mixed-Messages: 5 Examples

By Richard Brody

It's often been said, one of the most meaningful, relevant necessities of any public official, is earning the trust, from, both those, he serves and represents, within this country, as well as how he's perceived, on the international stage! One of the essential aspects/ components, is, most of us, seek a high degree of consistency, rather than inconsistency, in the message, these people provide, and articulate! Perhaps, unlike any time, in recent memory, we have witnessed, since the election of Donald J. Trump, to the office of President of the United States, someone, in that position, who, consistently, articulates a mixed - message, which is often confusing, and disconcerting! With that in mind, this article will briefly examine, review and discuss 5 examples of this, and the potential harm, it creates.

1. Health reform: During his campaign for the office, Trump, often, articulated a somewhat, simplistic, uninformed, overly rhetorical message, which claimed, he would improve health care and insurance, making it, much better, and less expensive. Once elected, he said he never realized, how complicated, doing so was, which, in, and of, itself, should be concerning! When the House of Representatives, approved their proposals, first, he celebrated with them, and, then, said, he hoped the Senate would approve something, which was less mean! These proposals were not truly health reform, because they did nothing to reduce costs, or improve delivery of services. Again, this was rhetoric, over policy!

2. Tax reform: While, both as a candidate, as well as. after his election, he proclaimed he would create a tax reform program, which lowered taxes, like never before witnessed. Although some might benefit, slightly, initially, others will not, especially, those from states, with higher local taxes. In addition, the vast majority of these tax breaks, go to larger corporations, and the wealthiest 1%, and, while Trump articulated a victory for the middle - class, the actual legislation, was far more, Welfare, for the wealthiest!

3. Intentions towards CHIPS, and DACA: President Trump has often articulated a message, where he proclaims, he cares about health care for the neediest children (CHIPS) and the so - called, Dreamers. However, if we believe, actions speak louder than words, it's concerning, he has used these necessities, which polls show, the vast majority of Americans support, and approve of, as pawns, to negotiate to get the funds, for his Wall!

4. Immigration/ wall: While most would agree, we need to address the public's safety, and the threat from terrorism, Trump's articulated message, seems more focused on rhetoric and vitriol, than viable solutions. He continues to emphasize his wall, and his recent statement, where he said, he was open to a path to citizenship, for the so - called, Dreamers, but binding that, to Congress approving a large expenditure, for that wall!

5. Personal integrity: After witnessing this man's behavior and rhetoric, why would anyone believe, what he says? He has compromised his personal integrity, by resorting to numerous lies and misstatements (Fact - checkers state he has lied over 5 times per day), and, rather than introducing well - developed, viable, relevant, sustainable solutions, consistently resorts to blaming and complaining.

President Trump has polarized this nation, to a degree, never previously witnessed! When one's message is blurred, and contradictory, everyone suffers and loses!

The Current Political Climate in America Is Uniquely Favourable to Third Parties

The Current Political Climate in America Is Uniquely Favourable to Third Parties

By Eric Braaten

It's no secret that both the Republican and Democratic Parties are suffering from self-inflicted injuries leading to a potentially lethal hemorrhaging of voter confidence, while Independent, No Party Preference and third parties are seeing gains that are beyond anything in recent history. This is hardly a surprise, as both the major parties have thoroughly and completely sold out their respective bases in a succession of corporate buy-offs that were steadily advanced for decades through administrations of both the major parties. All of this has culminated in the regrettable situation of the present; Trump, a quintessential capitalist and definitive man-brand, leads a pack of former lobbyists and executive pillagers on a raid of the few remaining functional public systems and institutions. This is not unprecedented, there already exists a term for this type of corporate coup d'tat, this utter co-opting by private interests and sectors of an entire society: fascism.

Many among the Democratic Party's base are waiting on the rapidly approaching Unity Reform Commission's recommendations to see if the Party is still capable of effecting necessary changes. Others are still others are waiting on Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), intent on following his lead. Many, however, have already formally exited the Democratic Party, seeing that the die had already been cast when DNC Chairman Tom Perez instituted a purge of the progressives that held leadership roles, rules committee spots and at-large status within the organization he is purportedly trying to unify. This move effectively ensures the capacity to squelch implementation of the required reforms, or even worse, to keep the reform recommendations bogged-down under endless review and study, delaying action in order to ensure loyal, long-suffering democrat donkeys keep plodding along after the same manky, withered old turnip they dangle on a string and distracted all the way through the 2018 primary process, impacting third-party ballot accessibility by delaying the inevitable en-masse abandonment of the unresponsive Democratic Party. Progressives still within the Democratic Party are being stymied and marginalized, I implore you; be not satisfied with half-measures towards incremental change, nay, instead know that these exceptional circumstances and impending catastrophes will necessitate the rise of a true alternative, one unpurchased by oligarchs, free to implement the types of innovative measures required to avert the ever-encroaching insidious corporate control and fascistic creep, an inevitable outcome of wanton capitalism.

While the Democratic Party finds itself in an existential crisis of self-obsolescence, crushed under the weight of their own hypocrisy, the Republicans are scarcely in better shape. While some among the GOP's base fervently maintain that Trump is conducting a stealthy take-down of the Deep State one might suggest that he could stand to be doing a better job of sabotaging the numerous detrimental actions undertaken by the White House in this first year of the Trump administration. Lives are being destroyed and lost, families are being torn apart and futures have been forever stifled. This damage cannot be undone. There are others among the MAGA faithful who insist that Trump is actually a devastatingly brilliant political double-agent in process of demolishing the GOP to clear the way for him to launch a third party of his own. Some of those of the progressive element within the Republicans even hope to co-opt the party and re-purpose it towards more equitable ends. While all this may seem like desperate self-deception to some observers it is indicative of the disarray among the Republicans and the ever-present discontent among the GOP's base.

This situation might not hold out in its present configuration until the 2020 elections, but the unpopularity of the Republican leadership and their legislative ventures leave the Republicans uniquely vulnerable to third-party disruption, as districts long-ago gerrymandered to ensure the exclusion of traditionally Democratic demographics aren't necessarily able to achieve the same type of polarized voting patterns with third-party campaigns that are more grounded in substantive populist policy. Appeals can be made to the disaffected, disenfranchised Republican base on many issues of near-universal consensus be they net neutrality, campaign finance reform and the removal of PAC and lobbying money from the political process, jobs programs, privacy rights, opposing constitutional infringements, trade agreements designed to benefit employees by confirming workers' rights for all participating parties which in turn helps spur domestic growth, a financial exchange tax to promote fiscal responsibility and prevent arbitrary or punitive withdrawals of capital, equitable taxation that eases the undue burden placed upon the impoverished and instead takes from the wealthiest their due share and re-investing those gains into needed infrastructure projects such as clean energy to reduce dependence on energy imports which in turn strengthens national sovereignty and improves the health of the people, these are all appeals that seem to find some measure of resonance with many of those the Republican Party has turned its back on. A disaffected republican who is hesitant to support the GOP after its repeated lies and betrayals would in all likelihood find the Democrats equally repellent, increasing the chance they might turn towards other parties that present a positive message.

With both major parties floundering and an almost unprecedented need for systemic changes, the spotlight falls on the plethora of fragmented progressive groups as they build a coalition and form the Movement for a People's Party. A number of progressives align themselves so closely with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) that they seem disinclined to formally part ways with the Democratic Party until he does. Certainly there is an argument that can be made that an early departure only serves to undermine the diligent efforts of the Sanders-affiliated members of the Unity Reform Commission, but while one can laud the attempts of Sanders and his appointees to affect positive reforms, one is not obliged to march in lock-step with their efforts. Perhaps progressives might be able to, rather than wait for the DNC establishment to cross a 'red line' as they inevitably will, instead begin building the platform and the political vehicle based around the wildly popular policies championed by Senator Sanders so that he might contest the dominance of the duopoly and seize upon the tremendous opportunity that third-party candidates have in this otherwise divisive, dispirited political environment.

Artificial Intelligence: The Next Tech Bubble or the Changing Face of Technology

Artificial Intelligence: The Next Tech Bubble or the Changing Face of Technology

By Shalini Singh Taknet

Did you know that five of the biggest tech giants viz. IBM, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, and Amazon have recently formed a partnership for the research and development of Artificial Intelligence?

And these market leaders form just the top of the cream. Thousands of startups like Kwiziq, JamieAI, and Verv are blooming across the globe, investing in the development of upcoming AI era. So what is it that all these businesses have found in the potential of this technology that is driving them to hustle? And more importantly, why is it important for your business to participate and adapt to this futuristic technology?

More efficient digital assistance

Machines have since the beginning set themselves as important because of their ability to enhance human efficiency. Let's just assume what change in efficiency can be brought upon when these machines become actually intelligent; when they can make best possible decisions on their own, without being affected by the limiting constraints of human beings? There will be fewer errors, less unpredictable problems, and fewer delays, all of which will have a cumulative effect on the overall efficiency of any system.

Digital marketing at its best

Many companies are already in the process of garnering the potential power of artificial intelligence and are working with intelligent chatbots to enhance their marketing efforts. It is no wonder they have taken this route. Chatbots and other similar AI marketing solutions can take digital marketing to its extreme, where you can solve the queries of your potential customers, create interactive marketing campaigns, and resolve many repetitive and monotonous tasks without having to invest in multiple resources.

Limitless exploration

When it comes to exploration, biological boundaries of humans have always been considered as the biggest limitation. And it is not just the biological needs that have kept us from exploring inhospitable environments of space or underwater. These limitations are also in the form of our sensory perceptions. There are many wave patterns and frequencies that humans are simply unable to detect, this is why machines like the thermal camera that detects infrared waves have become so important for the seamless exploration even of our immediate environment. Machines with artificial intelligence can remove all these problems with a single stroke.

Wide application scope and new opportunities

As opposed to the most recent technological developments, AI becomes more desirable because of its far-fledging application. Since most of the present technological advances are limited to the technological ground only, the field was losing its significance in other spheres of life. But with AI, such is not the case. Its potential has made it a most sought-after invention in the areas of medical science, financial systems, air transport, heavy mechanical industries, and even art.

Transitional Shift

Unlike social media, AI is not a booming phase. It is the development of a completely new ecosystem that will change the technology as we know it today. There is no limit to what the future may hold when we come to the peak of AI development when intelligent machines will be working without the biological constraints of human bodies. It will continue to evolve at an exponential rate, solving perhaps, some of the most profound mysteries of the universe.

At present, even with all its advancements, AI can still be considered in its newborn stage, and for all those businesses that aspire to survive and thrive through this transitional shift, it is extremely important for them to adapt.

When President Trump Lies, Who Loses? 5 Losers

When President Trump Lies, Who Loses? 5 Losers

By Richard Brody

Whether one agrees or disagrees with, supports or opposes, or what one's personal opinion of the man, may be, there should be, nearly, universal agreement, President Donald Trump, is certainly, unlike, any of his predecessors, in recent memory. Although, having personally worked on numerous political campaigns, for over 4 decades, I recognize, most politicians, stretch the truth, and resort to spinning the facts, to put them, in the best, possible, light, Trump has taken that tendency, to previously, unobserved, heights! Political fact - checkers have stated, he has lied, or materially mis - stated information, an average of over 5 times, per day, since his election! With that in mind, this article will attempt to briefly examine, review and consider, 5 situations, where these lies. have created true losers.

1. Himself: Every time someone lies, and gets caught, either lying, or contradicting himself, he becomes a loser, because he. ends up, losing his personal credibility! Why should anyone believe anything, this man says, when he tells so many lies, constantly and consistently? Is he a congenital liar, a pathological one, or similar to, The boy who cried wolf? The reality is, when something significant needs to be addressed, his constant use of stretching the truth, will make it challenging, to get many to believe anything he says and/ or claims!

2. International: Rhetoric and vitriol, often, have significant ramifications, and when the President of the United States, which is considered, the most powerful individual, in the free world, makes heated claims, and either exaggerates, mis - states, and/ or lies, he loses his credibility, around the world! In fact, numerous polls have indicated, the U.S. is now held in the lowest esteem, throughout the world, it has ever been!

3. His core supporters/ followers: Candidate, Trump claimed, I love the uneducated, apparently, in order, to inspire these individuals, to support his candidacy! He made many promises, for example, to factory workers, coal miners, etc, which, either, he knew, at the time, or should have, were, at the very least, exaggerations! These individuals have been hurt, because, they would have been better served, by retraining and relevant preparation, for the evolving world, and no one is served, when he claims to deny Climate Change, etc!

4. America's freedoms: Trump appears to get his facts from, what is often, referred to, as the Alt Right, or Far Right, and rather than, exploring realities and alternatives, has often made inflammatory statements, about many topics. His attempt to motivate certain fringe followers, by articulating vitriol, and using inflammatory statements, etc, has threatened, the very, freedoms, which have made America, great! For a man, whose slogan is, Make America Great Again, shouldn't we demand, a commitment to the truth?

5. Neediest Americans: Perhaps the biggest losers, in Trump's reliance on lying, are the neediest Americans! These individuals need leadership, which focuses on ways to improve their lives, rather than one, who claims to care, while constantly supporting laws and ideas, which are against their best interests, such as the recent tax reform, which favored corporations and the wealthiest, and health care reform, which would have taken away certain necessary protections. The constant attacks on minorities, immigrants, the Press, etc, have had their greatest, negative impact, on those, who can least afford it!

Trump states he wants to Make American Great Again, but, then, seems to demonstrate, his idea of greatness, is often based on lies, distortions, and enriching the wealthiest, often, at the expense of the rest of the nation. Wake up America, and show, you won't be swayed, by lies, etc!

How to Deal With an Athletic Season Ending and the Beginning of an Offseason

How to Deal With an Athletic Season Ending and the Beginning of an Offseason

By Derek Parola

The end of a season is a time for a coach to evaluate, reflect, and improve from the season that just happened. There are many activities a coach can do to help aid this process. One thing he or she should do is have end of the year meetings with each of their players. This meeting should consist of the player explaining how they think they did that year. What they think that they should improve on and what they think the coach or team can improve on. Once the player is finished talking then the coach should explain how they thought the player performed and what the player can improve on for the next upcoming season. This is important because the player and coach may have different views on how that player performed. By letting the player talk and feel like their opinion is valued, it creates a relationship between the player and coach. This allows the coach and player to trust one another on a deeper level. Now that this has been accomplished, the offseason can can be tackled head on.

The offseason is the least exciting time of the year for an athlete, but it is the most important time for a developing athlete. This is the time for a veteran player to get their mind and body healthy and for a developing player to increase speed, strength, and skills. The key to having a productive offseason is having a purpose each and every day that you choose to do something related to your sport. When I say the word purpose, I mean there should be a goal set every practice, rehab session, or weight room lift. An example of having a purpose at practice would be "I'm going to get better at my shot fake one dribble and shoot today" or I'm going to work on laying off breaking balls down in the zone today." This is very productive because if you get better at something small each day, then by the end of a 150 day offseason, you are better at a lot of little things which makes you a better player overall.

Another thing the offseason allows players to do besides getting better on the field or court, is to give themselves a break from the wear and tear a long season gives to their body. My recommendation for a player that has a lot of aches and pains is to not do anything for at least 2 weeks. No lifting, practicing, or conditioning. This 2 weeks should be used to get away from the sport. This is important not only for physical health, but also mental health. This 2 week break will allow you to feel more energized and excited to get back to work when it's over.

Should People in All Countries Have Equal Access to All Technological Developments?

Should People in All Countries Have Equal Access to All Technological Developments?

By Rosina S Khan

Ever wondered about the above title question? Will it be a yes or no? What do you think? Let's dive into a discussion. Read on to find out.

Well, people who can afford technological developments should be allowed access. Thos who cannot can still do so by managing, budgeting and saving. These technological developments entice both rural and urban people alike and both the categories want to learn and use them.

As a result, the literacy rate rises, so does the economy and the country's outlook gets better.

Government authorities can take the measures to censor obscene scenes, pictures and sites so that the little and adolescents are not spoiled at an early age. It is equally good to maintain peace, harmony and balance among young dating people.

What are some of the technological developments? In fact these include but are not limited to IOT (internet of things), smart phone, TAB, iPad, iPod, laptops, notebooks etc and applications such as Instagram, Google map, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and the lot.

All of these are fun to use for both the old and young as well as the urban and rural. The old can keep in touch with their children and grandchildren while the rural can connect to more modern and urban relatives. Everyone benefits and everyone is happy having access to the technological developments.

On the overall, I don't see any reason why people of a nation, especially a developing one should lack the privilege of using technological developments because they too form the media of education and learning and hence literacy. If a nation gets encouraged to develop themselves through these means, why not? Give them access and rights and they will not only love it but also benefit as well.

Talking of benefits, what are some of them? The people in rural and urban areas get familiarized with numerals and words in the English language and also their native language. They are able to understand many signs and icons which are helpful in the new age. They learn to use applications via digital gadgets, which is a plus in career and work niches.

Learning the English and native languages along with signs and symbols, it is easy for rural people to transition to the cities and for city people to move to developed countries and therefore, upgrade their status, outlook and be financially free.

Therefore, this is the modern era. So as I mentioned earlier, with censoring being active country-wide, the people of any nation should be allowed to access all the technological developments, especially the benign and beneficial ones.

Is Technology a Bringer of Great Promise or Great Peril?

Is Technology a Bringer of Great Promise or Great Peril?

By Bil Ouazzani

The pace of change continuously astounds and bewilders me. I just about remember horses pulling coal carts as a kid and now we're developing driverless cars. The Internet of Things will be part of our daily life soon and humankind seems to be losing the ability to stand up straight already. How long will it be before we start resembling bananas more than apes with a pronounced curve of the spine and neck from staring down at mobiles?

Mobile Phone Addiction

We're in the Fourth Industrial Revolution

According to the World Economic Forum, we're now in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. We've already lived through an immense amount of change and who knows what is round the corner. The ever rising march of Artificial Intelligence (AI) shows great promise in many fields for the future but it is also highly controversial and multi-faceted.

Even Elon Musk, the 'Thomas Edison of the 21st century' has serious doubts about what we are creating for ourselves. The serial entrepreneur who has had a hand in all types of technology from electric cars, rockets, Paypal, Hyperloop, solar power systems, electric jets to digital technology. The man who is famous for his plans to colonise Mars, further DNA sequencing to identify cures for diseases and viable fusion to create energy for us all for ever.

Mars colonisation

A man who is a bringer of great promise. However Musk also predicts that 'robots will be able to do everything better than us' and they will 'take your jobs, and government will have to pay your wage'. He also believes that we should be very concerned and proactively regulate Artificial Intelligence as it is a 'risk to the existence of human civilization' in a way that risks we commonly deal with now are only harmful to a set of individuals in society.

In contrast Mark Zuckerberg, the equally famous entrepreneur of Facebook is more optimistic saying that artificial intelligence will improve life in the future and that naysayers are irresponsible.

Is technology the bringer of great promise?

The positives of AI are certainly immense

"For people with a disability, the Fourth Industrial Revolution will give us super powers"

Birgit Skarstein, Double paralympic athlete and World Rowing Champion, Norway

"Imagine a robot capable of treating Ebola patients or cleaning up nuclear waste."

Dileep George, artificial intelligence and neuroscience researcher

"Any skilled engineer can take control remotely of any connected 'thing'. Society has not yet realized the incredible scenarios this capability creates."

Andr Kudelski, Chairman and CEO of Kudelski Group

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already playing a massive role in health care and some believe that there is an AI Healthcare 'tsunami coming' that will benefit all. Data currently has the biggest part to play in healthcare providing the chance to revolutionise current healthcare systems.

AI Nurse

Google's Deepmind Health project mines medical records to provide faster and more detailed records.

IBM Watson is working with oncologists to create treatment plans using data from clinical notes and combining that with research, data and clinical expertise. IBM's Medical Sieve algorithm analyses radiology images to detect issues faster and more reliably.

The new Babylon app hopes to decrease doctors waiting times by giving medical AI consultations combining a person's medical history, medical knowledge and a database of diseases using speech recognition. It can also remind patients to take their medication.

Molly is a new virtual nurse which supports patients with chronic diseases in between doctor's visits.

AiCure checks if patients are taking their medicine and helps them manage their conditions.

Deep Genomics looks for mutations and linkages to disease using genetic and medical data and hopes to predict what will happen when DNA is altered.

Human Longevity offers genome sequencing alongside body scans and checkups to spot diseases in their very early stages.

Atomwise use AI to find existing drugs that could be used for other conditions, therefore, speeding up and reducing costs and potentially avoiding future pandemics.

Berg Health mines data to analyse why some people are insusceptible to certain diseases to help current treatments and discover new drugs.

The future certainly looks bright - but have you started to notice the changes in everyday life that are already impacting our lives?

Is technology the bringer of great peril?

"You cannot wait until a house burns down to buy fire insurance on it. We cannot wait until there are massive dislocations in our society to prepare for the Fourth Industrial Revolution."

Robert J. Shiller, 2013 Nobel laureate in economics, Yale University

Throughout the globe transportation, communication and education have all improved through high tech. With every improvement, however, there are negative consequences such as resource depletion, increased population and pollution.

In our more mundane everyday activities digital technology is already changing our lives. Many of us are already suffering from distraction, narcissism, expectation of instant gratification, depression, depleted vision and hearing, neck strain and lack of sleep. The National Sleep Foundation found 95% of people when surveyed used electronic devices before sleep and this can cause issues for our overall wellbeing.

We are becoming less dependent now on our memory and more on Google but often feeling that we're suffering from information overload. If we don't 'use our brains' will we lose our capability to think effectively? Or will we adapt in a different way?

When examining brain scans of frequent internet and mobile users vs occasional users there was twice as much activity in the short term memory and quick decision making area. We are learning to skim where there is too much information. Does that mean that we are becoming shallow thinkers or does it mean our ability to decipher information is actually becoming more efficient?

Technology will affect our jobs

I attended a LinkedIn conference recently on the use of insight and data in recruitment and the potential for AI.

The recruitment landscape is changing rapidly and the McKinsey Global Institute estimates that 46% of the activities in Europe's top five economies are already susceptible to automation - not in the near future, but right now.

This will affect all of us in some way and we need to be prepared for the shift towards even more hi tech based skills. There aren't enough key digital workers or software developers already in many countries and this situation will only be exacerbated as the years go by. We may need a future full of coders or at the very least software that professionals can use that removes the need to code.

It wasn't the AI potential or recruitment issues that grabbed my attention at the conference, however. It was a speech by Baroness Sarah Greenfield, a leading neurologist.

How neuroscientists see our future

Sarah used her neuroscience background to look at what could be happening to many of us in the modern digital age. She thinks that with so many of us obsessed with social media, search engines, mobile apps and gaming that we are actually losing our identity as human beings. We are lacking the enriched environment that creates increased neural connections in the brain and that the average person in the future may behave more like a 3 year old. That alarmist sentence certainly grabbed my attention.

She likened the lack of an interesting life full of different experiences to that of someone with Dementia where someone loses brain connections and doesn't have a frame of reference (rather like a small child). In other words, their identity is missing, they have short attention spans and demand that needs be satisfied instantly.

Social Networking issues

With conversations taking place more online and less so face-to-face with no opportunity for eye contact or emotions, the true sense of someone's identity could be slowly eroded. Words are normally only 10% of the total impact of a face-to-face conversation. Are we lacking 90% of normal interaction on Social Media? Do we rely on emojis to perceive emotion now?

Gambling

Gaming rather than reading

Sarah stated that the move away from reading to video game playing was concerning. Reading allows you to have a deep 'relationship' with the characters where you become the character in a way that isn't really possible in video games.

Are gamers similar to gamblers?

Sarah showed us brain scans of gamers vs gamblers and how the Dopamine pathways were very similar and that damaged dopamine can lead to taking greater risks. The thrill of the moment when playing a game or gambling can override the consequences with the senses overtaking cognitive thought. Is our use of social media, the internet and apps reducing us to a society who is constantly craving stimulation, trying to achieve a Dopamine high, only living in the here and now and being driven by our feelings rather than serious thought?

I considered the level of gaming, social media and relentless Google searching via mobile throughout my family and pondered the consequences.

I can already see my children and all of their friends being taken over by gaming. They don't talk about much else and seem to be totally ruled by it. Then my own usage is much higher than I would like. I work with Social Media and it is hard to avoid but I am certainly far too dependent on it.

I started delving into whether Sarah Greenfield's comments are absolutely on the button. The scientific community have issues with some of her statements which need more proof rather than just hypothesis So I looked for further evidence as I'm sure that much of this is true to a certain extent as I see it every day with people stumbling through life joined to their mobiles and children not going out to play in the way they used to.

Facebook likes

So many of us use Facebook. The 'Like' button is acknowledged to be the same as receiving a little reward. Users gamble when they do something on Facebook - will we get a Like or be ignored? We're all subconsciously looking for positive feedback and confirmation, and yes it is addictive. Social Media has become a digital drug that has taken over our culture.

And does heavy Social Media usage actually make you feel good? A study in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology found that Facebook and depressive symptoms go hand in hand. "Social comparison" is what links Facebook time and depressive symptoms together. Thinking that your friends are having a better time than you. It suggests that users need to post a balance of good and bad. I've been sucked in by this but on reflection if I'm having a great time I'm not thinking of Facebook. I see people at gigs filming the whole night but feel that they're actually missing the chance to immerse themselves in the atmosphere (whilst I'm dancing like a woman possessed)

It's not just Social Media, however - there's the apps. I hang my head in shame at using Candy Crush as a Mum gamer years ago. But it didn't stop there - I became a master of Sim City and then Fallout Shelter and realised I had better stop when my kids started asking me for mobile app tips #parentingfail. I watch Netflix on my mobile in the bath, I'm always checking Social Media for work and communicating with people in sports/community groups that I need to be on top of. It's a mixture of positive and negative - I am reminded of what I need to do, could be doing, should be doing - but its constant. I even get mobile app reminders telling me to meditate! Oh the irony.

Tired mobile

Scott Levin, a Director of the US Family Medicine Residency Program, thinks that parents are so focused on their children's screen time that they forget about their own usage. "If we're not aware, as parents, of what we're modeling for our kids, then there are high prices to pay".

69% of parents and 78% of teens check their mobiles at least hourly.

(Common Sense Media)

So why do we get so drawn into games and mobile apps? Even Mums? I even know a Grandmother who played Candy Crush throughout the night.

Game designers call it 'juice' - the feedback or reward that you get from playing a game. Candy Crush plays sounds, flashes brightly and praises you in a strangely deep voice and apparently we like that - a bit much.

Juice is intended to join the gaming and real worlds together. The opportunities for Juice in virtual reality (VR) technology are even greater where the user is in an immersive environment and the juice might even be multisensory soon to include touch, hearing and smell.

Is the future of some of us going to be one of a VR life rather than a real one? If the VR life appears better than your own will users start removing themselves from normal society and living in this VR world?

Can gaming really be addictive?

Researchers have studied the psychological rewards of video games vs gambling vs drug use for over 20 years. They've compared the brain's dopamine pathway (the pleasure part) but we still don't know whether uncontrollable video game playing is an addiction on its own terms or just a symptom of deeper problems such as depression or anxiety.

New technologies are often blamed for compulsive behaviour when depression and social anxiety are the true culprits. "When you don't know how to fix that and create opportunities for yourself, you feel helpless. Why not play video games?" (Video Game Researcher, Nick Yee)

What can we do to prevent digital technology impacting our lives negatively?

Sarah Greenfield recommends that we apply a little risk management to our lives and ensure that we are living real lives and not just digital ones. Her advice probably resonates with most as it is standard advice given by mothers throughout recent times. But it is probably more important now than ever.

Go and exercise

- make new brain cells, give yourself time to free your mind

Interact with nature

Sit down and share a meal with someone

- talk to them - share stories and experiences

Do something creative

- be an individual!

Cycling

Harness your individuality and don't miss out on real life

The UK is known for its creative industries and if we allow our creativity to slide and become an unthinking population of 3 year olds what do we have left?

Is this absolutely true for everyone? How do you become a brilliantly creative games designer without being fairly gaming obsessed? Are our software developers all devoid of cognitive thought? Of course not.

Our world is changing, and our brains are adapting to that new world. Good analysis and research looking at the co-evolution of mind and society can only be a good thing.

Is technology a bringer of great promise or great peril?

It seems to be both but it doesn't have to be that way. We can reduce the potential peril by researching the effect digital technology is having and taking steps to counteract it. We can put heavy checks and balances into what is being developed and how. The overarching concern may be whether that will happen if the real power behind society lies with the huge technology companies.
