You can very quickly achieve your guitar playing goals - you just need to understand exactly how to make your practice time extremely effective.
After helping thousands of guitar students over the years get results in their playing, I found that guitarists often use their practice time very ineffectively. By wasting so much practice time, you drastically prolong the time it takes to reach your musical goals. Once you are able to get results from every single second of guitar practice, your progress will skyrocket.
Here are the four guitar practicing habits you need to correct in order to make faster progress:
1. Practicing Some Items Too Much And Others Too Little
This mistake is commonly made because of the following:
1. Improperly managed Guitar Practicing Time. A lot of guitar players figure that all they must do is practice everything for an equal amount of time. This is incorrect. Truth is: not all musical skills need to be practiced with the same frequency as others. Some musical skills (such as writing songs) should be worked on less often, but in more time per practice session. On the other hand, technical guitar licks may require a higher frequency of practice with moderate time used each session. When you randomly divide up the time spent on each task into equal segments in your schedule, you end up scheduling a lot more time than what is needed for some items and not enough for others. As a result, you make extremely slow progress in all areas.
2. Instant Gratification Practice. it's common for guitar players to waste tons of time practicing things they are already highly proficient in. As a result, they never actually advance in the areas they are weak in, bringing their overall guitar playing down as a whole.
How you divide up your guitar practice time also depends on some other variables. These include: how much time you have to practice, how good you are at each item, your personal guitar playing goals, and how certain items are best practiced and mastered. When any of this is altered, you need to change your practicing routine. If you don't, you'll end up with unbalanced skills and ineffective practice.
2. Working On Elements Of Guitar Playing In The Incorrect Order
The particular order of items you practice is instrumental for how much/little improvement each practice session offers you. This applies on both a small level and a zoomed-out, macro level. Macro level meaning: the various types of musical skills (such guitar playing technique, theory, ear training, etc.). The smaller level means the specific exercises within each area. To make your practice more effective, you need to identify the best order for both the types of musical skills and the specific exercises within each category.
3. You Don't Warm Up Effectively
Everyone understands the importance of warming up before practicing. However, very few people truly do this and far less do this properly. A lot of guitarists believe that "warming up" means literally warming up their fingers by running through a special set of movements or chromatic exercises. This actually wastes your time, and here's why:
1. You spend too much of your practice time practicing things that have NOTHING to do with the materials you wanted to practice that day.
2. Even worse, you're often disconnected from these exercises mentally because you see them as "just warm-up". As a result, you mentally prepare yourself to do the same as you practice the items you really want to improve. Your brain is just as important as you fingers while practicing guitar.
Stop wasting countless amounts of time trying to find good warm-up exercises. The exercises that are best used to warm up with are the ones you intend to practice - only played at a slower tempo. Also, your brain should be warming up as well as your fingers. Stay focused and pay close attention while warming up in order to prepare yourself for your practice session.
4. Practicing At Speeds That Your Brain Can't Handle
"Practicing guitar" is much more than simply "repeating the same movements over and over again". You need to focus both your mind and your ears on particular elements of your guitar playing and refine them. For instance, rather than randomly playing a scale pattern over and over, you can observe your picking hand to ensure that you aren't using excessive motion. You could also practice while making sure that the notes do not ring together as you transfer from one string to the next.
Your brain analyzes every note you play and has to make specific adjustments to move your hands where they need to go. If you frequently practice faster than your mind can "analyze", you are merely reinforcing whatever habits (whether good ones or bad ones) you already have.

Flash Fiction: A U-Turn
Rains lashed onto my bare back as I scooped up her fragile frame and carried her out of the car. Perhaps, she'd passed out, couldn't endure the pain she suffered.
Perhaps, she just pretended to be asleep. Never wanted to face the reality. Never wanted to see the man who left her alone in the dark of the night.
All alone, I didn't know how long she waited for me.
Not bothering to look at her exposed thighs hidden scantily under my shirt, I made my way to the front door of the house.
She whined under the fur blanket as I cleaned the scars and bruises with warm water.
Signs of sufferings, a brutal assault. Someone had robbed my soul, assaulted the woman I loved the most.
Shame on me.
I couldn't protect her.
Monsters hidden underneath human skin ran away when I reached the spot where I left her.
A casual argument.
I didn't realize when it transformed into a battle of sexes. Rants of feminism and gender equality. She forced me to pull over.
I could have stopped her, could have apologized. But, I did nothing when she got out of the car.
Instead of waiting for her to cool down, I drove away. It was an hour later I realized my mistake and took a U-turn in haste.
She quivered inside the blanket. Her whimpers communicated the trauma she bore on her soul.
"I'm here baby," I whispered in her ear, caressing the entangled mess of her hair.
She opened her eyes.
Tears slid down the corners of her eyes.
"I lost it. I struggled but I lost it. They were four." Her words pierced needles in my ears, shredding my skin and exposing the bones underneath.
"Calm down sweetie. You need rest. Shall I get something for you? How about a cup of hot chocolate."
"I need you. Promise me you'll never leave me again even when I tell you to go away. Even when I fight with you. Promise me you'll tackle my tantrums. Hold me in your arms when I'm angry. Kiss me when I cry."
"I Promise sweetheart. Do I deserve an apology?" I asked my gaze dipping to the carpet.
She held my hands. "Have you informed the cops?"
"Not yet. Do you want to do it now or we can go tomorrow," I replied meeting her gaze.
"Thanks," she said, her eyes glistening.
"Thanks for what?"
"I thought you perhaps don't want to involve the police because of your reputation of a clean guy. It could be hard for you at work. Your social life. Your friends. They will question."
"Nothing's more important than you. Life's all about taking a U-turn and starting afresh. Please allow me to take that turn where I'm just a teenage boy who is deeply madly in love with a girl."
She looked in my eyes as my grip tightened on her hand.
"I'll get some hot chocolate for us," I said holding back my tears.

Lalbagh is located at the heart of the city and has about a thousand types of flora and fauna. It also has few rock formations that are a million year old. The place is full of trees which have spent more than 100 years on earth.

Coming home from spring break, we passed by a skydiving venue off I-75 near Tampa. It appeared an attractive place and, as we looked on from the expressway, my passenger felt tempted to give it a try.
No matter how enticing the place was, I wanted no part of it. Having been terrified of heights since my childhood, I drove right past it.
The rest of the way home I pondered the art of skydiving, recalling television shows in which a character undertakes that hobby. Here is the list we came up with, which features classic sitcoms as well as modern series.

Even relatively small rocks and sticks can cause a lot of discomfort for someone in a sleeping bag. Those who use a shelter suspended from trees, however, need not worry about rocky or uneven terrain. The new challenge, of course, is finding two trees an appropriate distance apart. Trees must also be big enough to support your weight.

Atomic Structure: Beyond the Discovery of the "Indivisible"
It is a known fact that the smallest unit of matter or of the chemical element is the Atom; However, this was not always the case for all theories originate with an idea. Greek philosopher, Democritus, was the first to provide an atomic theory and therefore give existence to the "atomos," or the indivisible during the fifth century BC. His vision of the atomic model depicted a void or an empty space where the eternal atom lies; one which could continue to be broken down until it is in fact indivisible. His philosophical-based theory went as far as to propose that the atom maintains the unique properties of its original source, distinguished only by size and arrangement of its solid form. Nevertheless, Democritus lacked an accurate explanation of the atoms chemical behavior for it could be further simplified and therefore altered. It would be another 2000 years before his atomic theory was anew developed to fit a more suitable direction towards the uncovering of subatomic particles.
Chemist, John Dalton, developed a more valid description of matter by providing a foundation for the unit's behavior through experiment-based concepts. Today he is recognized for his atomic theory consisting of four significant rules in chemistry. For example, he was capable of foretelling that the atom is unique and distinguished from other atoms of an element for its weight or as presently referred to as atomic mass, by observing the distinct qualities of gas absorption in water as a response to variations in size. Teaching In The Tank
My students were inmates (they prefer detainees) in a boys' prison (aka Honor Camp) governed by many guards (or probation officers.) I learned much in the four years I taught there. At their ages (15-18), the state is still required to educate them.
Through many gates, under razor wire, to an enclosed camp for felony offenders, I taught U.S. history to kids who had never heard of the Holocaust. It wasn't an easy program to teach so many different levels of knowledge at once. Nor was it easy to avoid chaos in the classroom. They could be so volatile and break into fights at any moment.
Vocabulary among the boys was so limited we could not play board games until I allowed Spanish or slang. "Tuff is not really a word," I had to explain. "It's really spelled 'Tough.'" "As long as you know that 'uno' isn't English we can allow it." I refereed during one game. Games were only allowed with "back-up" which was one or two officers in the room at the time because boys would fight over the outcome. Losing caused intense frustration and anger in some.
Hopefully, I expanded their vocabularies; they sure expanded mine. "Sharks" were big boys with mental issues, "Shanking up" meant taking things from my classroom to put in a sock later and using in a fight. A "single digit midget" was a kid with less than ten days left to serve on his sentence.
For a few, I saw little hope. Short of breaking his spirit completely, the student who answered "suck this, Teacher Daniel," every time I spoke to him, I see little chance of him ever blending smoothly into society. I could have told him that he became the thing that went bump in the night because it terrorized him; he either had to become it or overcome it and he chose the former. I don't think it would have made a difference to him.
My musical tastes tend to run in the country and western area so Wiz Kahlifa, Dr. Dre, Snoop the Lion (fka Snoop Doggie Dog) and Tupac, be he dead or alive, has never caught my ear. But I "traded" a reading assignment (which involved them checking out a book at the new library on the grounds) with my going home and watching a video. I did stop at the Julian Library and used a computer to watch "Tupac in Hologram" at a place called Coachella and it was fun to discuss it with them the next day. It was fascinating to watch actually, except for the foul language.
There was utter darkness but plenty of light in there. Some gave me a cold chill. One insisted on telling me everything his Ouija board was saying about me. "It's how I talk to Satan," he explained when I asked what drew him to such a macabre game. "He wants to know why you're here with us," he informed me. More than once I told him I was praying for him which was probably not allowed but neither are satanic communications on school grounds I figured.
I worked for the county and was moved me around between 3 facilities-all juvenile offender camps. My recurring thought when I visited these 'campuses' was how to move some of these inmates into the taxpayer file. Caging all these warriors at $30K per kid, per year, is always going to run at a deficit. There are too many of them and the numbers are growing. Classes were beyond capacity when I left.
My thought was that if I could inspire just one kid to ideate himself as something beyond a criminal, he could shift from being a burden to a taxpayer. Maybe then he could become the asset he was sent here to be. The painter, singer, builder, doctor-whatever the original cards dealt. I doubt the universe sent anyone here to be a thug.
One student announced that he had killed a guy and didn't understand what he was doing still alive. He pointed to a new inmate that was being escorted in by guards and said, " I killed that guy!" "Me and a friend wrapped him in a carpet, tied the ends and threw it in the Escondido reservoir," he explained.
Later, that boy was in my class. I asked if he knew people thought he died and he said, "I did die. I drowned." "The nurses brought me back and showed me the water they pumped out of me. It was filled with beetles and grass and it was nasty," he told me. "I was underwater and my dead grandfather showed up and took me by the arm. He led me to a place 'above' my mother's apartment and he pointed down into it and said "Don't leave my daughter here. Go back and get her out of there. She is not safe!'" the boy told me.
Then he said "my old dog showed up and tackled me and while we were wrestling, I thought "Okay Grampa, I'll go back." "At that thought, I woke up in the hospital and my mother was there crying and the nurse said, 'Welcome back!'" He said that he felt so good, so happy and peaceful that they didn't understand. He said he hasn't told anyone about seeing his grandfather.
"It's called a 'peace which surpasses all explanation' son and it's what my people aspire to experience. We live for it in fact. Thanks for giving me more hope that it is real," I told him.
At the end of the day, I saw more hope than darkness. There's far too much talent and raw energy in there to waste by ignoring it or hoping it will die down over time-while caged and learning all kinds of new ways to break laws. I hope we don't lose these young men and we preserve some of that raw potential.

Burden of Being a Black Teacher
While working at a large high school, I have an insider's view of the educational scene. As a classroom instructor, I understand that teaching is only one facet of the teaching-learning process, a process which success centers upon effective communication.
Communication is undermined when students sense that they are of little importance to the teacher or the school. What teachers do in the classroom is important because the people who come there to learn are important. This attitude toward students is expressed a number of ways, including: the careful design of a course that meets the diverse needs of students, the devotion of energy to preparation for class, the clear expression of one's involvement in teaching, the respectful treatment of students in the give and take of classroom interaction, and the notion of classroom management.
Teacher expectation is equally important and is exhibited in the attitude of the teachers. Unfortunately some students with darker skin, who are usually tracked in lower level courses, share stories of teachers who have lower expectations for them.
As an educator, I understand how stressful it can be to have what appear to be non-responsive bodies in the class, especially when great care and planning occurred. Early in my teaching career, it was discovered that everyone will not achieve As and Bs, but also evident as an educator, was my obligation to instruct all students fairly and adequately. I also refrained from forming preconceived opinions about students based on a previous teacher's experience with a student. Every year, several students do not do well in other teachers' classes but attain As, Bs or Cs in my class. The former is not known until the student is in the house office receiving reprimands from an administrator.
Similarly to some of the students who have negative experiences with teachers, my first year teaching was quite a challenge, not the notion of teaching itself but the people inside the building made it very difficult for a new teacher to survive, luckily the students kept me afloat. My first year having my own classroom was a wonderful experience. I developed excellent relationships with my students and some of my colleagues. I also learned that some of the older, traditional teachers and faculty were not pleased to see my young, brown face. I could tell from the stares and rumors of me doing drugs that often got back to me. Although I had my teaching credentials: I began teaching with my Master of Arts in Teaching, something that some teachers did not have, but it did not seem to matter. Usually, a master's degree is required within five years of teaching. Furthermore, all my evaluations from the administrators went well. Still my colleagues found a way to make my life miserable. By winter of my first year teaching, I found myself in the assistant principal's office along with a union representative and the social studies chair. The reason I soon came to find out involved me opening a learning center in my hometown, an entirely different city and state.
Upon opening the center, a newspaper article regarding the opening day of the center appeared on the cover of the local section. The former president of the teacher's union lived in New Fairfield and read the paper. He gave the article to some administrators, a quite ironic thing to do considering the union is supposed to protect its workers. The paper mistakenly stated the learning center opened its doors between 3:00-3:30 pm. In reality, the center opened between 3:15- 3:30 allowing the allotted time of 30-35 minutes to drive from work. Opening the center at 3 pm was not possible because work did not end until 2:35 pm.
One time the coordinator asked me with conviction, if I had left work early. She said, "Did you leave work early yesterday?" I said, "No." She said, "Someone said you were seen leaving early yesterday." I thought about it and remembered that I went to grab lunch but returned. Fortunately for me my soon to be colleague, who was student teaching at the time, asked me if my girls (I was the coordinator for the girls' step team) could step at the Human Rights Symposium. I remembered this and told the coordinator about the conversation and told her to ask the student teacher. Of course she did and then reluctantly apologized.
The story in the paper clearly raised concerns with me leaving work early, but were unfounded. In addition to teaching at the center, I was also beginning an exam preparation course at the high school and had submitted copies to be made for an exam prep session offered in the after school program. To my surprise, one of the members of the social studies department took the copies from the copy room prior to completion to the social studies chair which landed me back in the assistant principal's office. When asked about why I had submitted several documents to the copy room, I reminded them that I was also teaching an SAT course in the after school program. No apologies were received, but the copies were given back.
My first year teaching was miserable and if it weren't for my mother, I probably would have left the profession long ago. I called home almost every day in tears with stories like the former. I was 21 years old when I started teaching and sometimes wonder if I hadn't listened to my mom where I would be, what I would be doing. I have found that helping others is my purpose.
This being said, the harsh reception I received my first couple of years should not surprise others when complaints of mistreatment among students surface. The following discussion with a security guard named Jim* confirmed the maltreatment students of color sometimes receive from white teachers. Jim told me during lunch one day, a teacher while walking down the hall bumped into a Hispanic male student. Although it may have been an accident, according to Jim, the teacher then said to the student, "Bump me again and I'll pour my hot coffee on you." Jim said that both he and the student were shocked by the teacher's comments. Jim reported the student had been talking to his friends and had not bumped the teacher. The student looked at the white male teacher and said, "Whatever, I didn't bump you."
Afterwards, Jim prompted by what he had just witnessed, approached an administrator to inform him of the event. The administrator's response was callous according to Jim. He said the administrator told him that the teacher had threatened to go the union and claimed that Jim had threatened his safety. Receiving this news, Jim told the administrator what he witnessed again and that he hadn't threatened anyone. The administrator told him, "You didn't see anything, it was noisy at lunch." Jim said, "Yes, I did," and repeated what he witnessed. Again, the administrator said, "You didn't see anything. It was noisy during lunch." Jim became irritated as he caught on to the cue. Jim told me afterwards that he just walked away in dismay.
Countless other incidents, according to Jim and other security guards continue. Students aren't the only ones to encounter disrespectful treatment, but inconsistent reprimands occur to teachers of color. For example two tenured teachers, one white and the other Hispanic, had gone for a run at the end of the school year during their break time, and when both returned to the school, the Hispanic teacher received an email and was questioned about his whereabouts and why he had gone running. After being requested to come to the office by the principal, he proceeded and once there looked around. He saw the other teacher was not present, and left the office. Upon questioning the other teacher, the Hispanic teacher learned that he was the only one summoned to the office.
Disrespectful encounters continue between white administrators and teachers of color and white administrators and white teachers with students of color. Talking with security guards at the school provides me with privileged information regarding race disparities in suspension, both in school and out. Students of color are suspended at higher rates than white students nationally. According to Jim, when Caucasian students are caught with drugs, the response entails no punishment because their parents may be on the Board of Education, employed by the district, or are lawyers.
Again, to draw a parallel to the race inequalities that exist in institutions, it took me three full teaching years before I could teach a law elective, even though I enrolled in a criminal justice doctoral program beginning my third year, and for years there was a struggle to achieve equitable teaching loads. On the other hand, white teachers in my department, who are not in a doctoral program, begin their first year teaching law electives. If I can be treated this way as an educated adult, imagine how the students are treated. There has been some improvement, but the list of injustices continue (to be discussed later).
