TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul knew how to end a letter. I can imagine him thinking, “What three things would my dear brothers and sisters in Christ need the most in the world? What would help them with any situation? What would give them the strength to carry on? What would be worth dying for? What would make life worth living?” This was more than the granting of three wishes. Paul prayed with the full knowledge that what he prayed could be our reality. He prayed that God would give you peace. He prayed that the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ would give you love. And finally, that God’s own grace would be on you for all eternity. Peace, love, and grace. What could you do with that today? How much would you keep for yourself? How much would you give away? So what do you do when someone offers you a gift? Today, might you take and be conscious of all the peace, love and grace God has for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your peace, love, and grace that You have for me. I pray that today I might really begin to experience the effects of Your peace, love, and grace in all that I do. In Jesus’ name.

ATTEND TO THE WORD

Proverbs 4:20-23 (NKJV) 20 My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. 21 Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; 22 for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh. 23 Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.

For the next few days, we are going to look into these great verses.  There is so much here, so let us get started.

Verse 20: “My son, give attention to my words.”  God is telling us to give His Word first place in our heart.  In the military, when an officer says “Attention!” the soldiers snap to it.  That is how God want us to be with His Word.

The word attention means concentration, dedication, attentiveness, diligence, mindfulness, affection, and studiousness.  It is a verb meaning to listen carefully, to pay attention, to give heed, and to obey.  That is pretty good stuff!

Our Father is telling us to give His Word our full attention, to dedicate ourselves to it, and to study it.  Why is that?  Well, as we will see later on in these verses, it brings health to our being.

In Hebrews 4:12 it says that the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

God’s Word is alive!  It has power within it!  Just as a seed will produce after its own kind, so God’s Word will produce after our Father’s kind.

So what do you need today? Do you need patience, or joy, or any other promise from the Word?  Then get the promise from the Bible, attend to it, and watch the harvest come!

Confession: Today, I attend to the Word of God.  It will produce an abundant harvest in my life!

GET RID OF STRESS

Philippians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

The world we live in is full of anxiety, stress, and pressure.  God has the answer for us.  He tells us what we can do to have peace in the midst of the storm, to rest while others are anxious, and to be calm while others are stressed.  This is something we are going to have to make a decision to do.  We need to make a decision not to be anxious.

Another translation puts it like this: “Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything…” How can we do that?  The rest of the verse tells us how: “…but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

I am so glad we have a God that not only hears our prayers, but is also faithful to answer them!

For the next way to stay at peace, we need to be thankful.  1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

When we decide not to be anxious, to let our requests be known to God, and to be thankful, then we get verse 7: God’s peace, which is beyond human understanding, will guard our hearts and minds.

The Amplified translation puts it this way: “And God’s peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

Confession:  Today, I make a decision to do the Word.  I will not be anxious about anything, but I will let my requests be made known to God.  I will be thankful.  And I am expecting His peace to mount guard over my heart and mind today!

Their Arm Was Covered In Cuts

When I was out the other day, I saw someone who had all these cuts on their forearm and I thought that this person must self-harm. Over the years, I have seen a number of people with arms that have received a lot of harm.

But, whenever I see something like this, I usually feel pain through imagining what it must be like and I feel deeply curious as to why something like this has taken place. I want to know what this person has been through; what it is that has caused them to do this to themselves.

Trauma

When someone has at least one arm that has been cut in this way, there is a strong chance that they have had a least one experience that completely overwhelmed them. And, if it wasn't one experience, then they would have had a number of experiences like this.

Perhaps this was how they felt during the beginning of their life, or it might be due to what has happened in their adult life. If it goes back to their early years, maybe they were abused and/or neglected.

Too Much

This pain is likely to have been so overwhelming that they had to disconnect from it, with this being a matter of survival. If this was the case, it is likely to show that there wasn't anyone available who could be there for them.

Yet, if their whole system was overwhelmed as a result of being abused, this is not much of a surprise. The person (or people) who abused them wouldn't have had the awareness to see how destructive their behaviour was.

A Build-Up

The years would have passed since this took place but the pain would have stayed in their body. And as they have disconnected from their body in order to protect themselves, they will spend a lot of time feeling numb.

Cutting their own body will enable them to feel something, and this will also allow them to experience an emotional release. Doing this will cause their body to release endorphins, too - the feel good chemicals.

The Downside

This will allow them to discharge some energy and to feel better for a short while, and this is what they need. However, the problem with doing this is that they are harming themselves in the process.

In addition, what it takes for them to experience pleasure at one point in time might not be what it takes at another, causing them to do even more damage to themselves. This is why it is going to be vital for them to reach out for the right support.

Final Thoughts

Due to what they experienced - either as a child or in their adult life - they can carry a lot of shame, and this shame can be exacerbated by what they have done to their body. Nevertheless, even though they can be caught up in this shame, it doesn't mean that there is something inherently wrong with them.

A therapist or a healer, for instance, will make this clear to them; that doesn't mean that they will be able to accept this straight away. This is likely to take time and effort, but they are worth it.

Future Education In The Age Of The Implanted Brain Information and Communication Chip

Not long ago, I was discussing with a future Think Tank member his concerns about how education in North America and around the world is not keeping up with technology, or ready for the future of computer-brain interfaces. This may sound like an esoteric topic, however when you consider the speed of these technologies, I am sure we've already all thought about how in the future, your smart phone will be nothing more than a brain-chip with full Internet Access that works with your organic brain in real-time. Want to send a thought, just think it, think about whom you'd like to send this thought to, and it's sent, post on social media and you are done.

Want to learn a new topic, no need, you have instant access to all human information, and it will feel as if it is all in your own memory, just think a question and viola, you have the answer. My think tank acquaintance noted that we are a ways off from that future, and if the past is any indication of how we might handle that future, then we are in big trouble. Education is broken already, and it will not be able to adapt to something that different. He noted we need to fix all the rote memorization teaching, it isn't working. And, I would submit to you that it will be even worse in the future, in fact; why memorize anything if you have full-time unlimited access to all the information ever created and stored in the cloud of humanity?

So what he is saying is that we have to teach people to THINK, not just put the students in rows, open their skulls and pour information in to them, which is what pedagogy has been for most of the 20th century and now to for a lot of this century. I of course agree. If we integrate the brain-chip or implanted information, or access to all human information in real time to the brain, it will only work if the human user has enough foresight to ask the right questions, and cross-pollinate the information in an innovative and creative way. This is something that humans are good at, when they practice it, and as of yet, AI computers are not so good at. Together (AI + human brains) it will be smarter than either on its own, smarter than today's human and smarter than a future AI computer chip w/instant access to all human information to date and up on all new information in real-time.

The increase in IQ wouldn't matter. Everyone would be super smart and retain unlimited information in the cloud storage device or set of distributive cloud computers around the planet. The best and most creative minds would use this information in the most novel ways, ask the best questions and have most of those questions answered to pose new ones. The speed of innovation would be so intensive that Ray Kurzweil's "Singularity" theory would be realized in short order.

A Life Of Meaning And Responsibility

We must create our own meaning and take responsibility for ourselves. With that said. I begin this article: I was having an early morning discussion today with my Mother about past pain and trauma in my childhood. Although it was mostly one-sided, and I was fully letting it go once in for all, I realized that if it is to be it is up to me. Especially when I seriously quote luminaries like Calvin Coolidge (on persistence) and Mark Spitz (on work ethic) almost all the time, now. Think about it, nothing takes the place of persistence and great work ethic, not even "natural genius" or "good looks that get you through initially". Do not just read what I am saying, hear what I am saying, especially "those that have everything on a silver platter, easy" that need a dose of this lesson here.

Sometimes, I think the real "easy way" comes to the person willing to do the hardest things in the genuine best and most meticulous way possible with full detail and honesty attended to in every way. On the other hand, the real hard way comes to those "who have it too easy without understanding fully what they have until after they have used it wrong". I took the genuinely real "easy way" like the first example, and that way seems "silly" sometimes to the best and worst of us until it is "too late", "after the fact" and all is said and done, results are tallied and realities counted for.

A life of meaning and responsibility is always harder than cruising through it all, but I can tell you that it is worth it in every way for anyone who fully lives it and without wishing for that "easy way" even at times. What do you think Friedrich Nietzsche really tried to mean by "The noble soul has reverence for itself"? A truly noble soul does not want any part of "easy dishonesty" and lives for what is real and really good instead of what "looks good". Reality to be conquered must genuinely be obeyed, right down to avionics when it comes to genuine plane flight? Well, I say life is that way, and it cannot be faked ultimately even if we seemingly and temporarily "get away with faking it for a while". So, start thinking: There is nothing to hide behind, really. There is nothing to fake definitely, and reality always catches up with us ultimately. If you do the right thing, there is nothing to worry about. If you do the wrong thing, it will catch up with you ultimately. Final hint in this article: The only ultimate cheater is in the mirror, and our only ultimate best friend if we do the right thing is in the mirror.

This was another interesting question that was supposed to be by one of my workshop participants.

She asked, "LN, I hear so many terms about measurements, such as metrics, indicator, key performance indicator, scorecard, and balance scorecard. Why so many terms? What do they mean and how do they relate?"

This reminded me of a very famous treatment by Dr. Edward Deming who said, "In God we trust. For rest, please bring data."

Measurements and business analysis are closely linked. If we can't measure something, we really don't know whether we performed well or something needs to be improved. At the same time, let me warn, everything that should be measured can't be measured, and same time everything we measure, are not necessarily worth measuring.

I have seen umpteen organizations who measure wrong things and then create trouble for themselves. That's another topic for discussion. Today, let me try to explain how these terms related to each other and where to use what.

The very first outer universe that you can think of is indicators. Everything that we will discuss now is essentially a subset of indicators.

So what's an indicator? In simple terms, an indicator indicates something that is of interest to stakeholders. All of us know traffic light indicator which tells you whether should move or you should stop.

Moving away from pure indicator which does not have a numeric value, we could start looking at providing a numeric value to the indicator. That's when we call it as a metrics.

For example, we could say our profitability is 25%. This indicates that it's a healthy profit margin that the organization is making. Metrics are measurable indicators.

Next comes is among the metrics which ones are key indicators or key performance indicators. An organization may have hundreds of metrics that it collects over a period of time, but not all metrics are equal.

Some metrics are critical to the operation of the business and must be monitored very closely. That's what we will call it as a key performance indicator. For example, the cash in the bank is a great KPI for any organization to monitor. If you run very low on cash, then your business can stop.

Now, what's a scorecard? A scorecard typically provides a combined performance indicator using multiple KPIs. We can create a performance scorecard for a department where we include key performance expectations that we are expecting from the organization.

Now, what's a balanced scorecard?

A balanced scorecard is one which is balanced with respect to different perspectives, such as financial perspective, people perspective, process perspective and customer perspective. It is also balanced with respect to past performances and likely future performances.

In my personal experiences, most organizations build balanced scorecard at an organization or enterprise level than building it at the system level. Metrics and KP are typically used at the processor system level. However, these are not iron cast and you may be able to use any of this at any level.

By the 21st century, digital technology firmly closed the book on it.

Why Is "Commonplacing" Important?

The reason *why* commonplacing is important is because of what it helps you do as an individual. Specifically, it's the focus that it helps you attain.

Commonplacing is really about becoming creative with your work. Rather than being entirely *reactive*, it should guide you to become more inquisitive, inventive and industrious.

Ultimately, it should really guide you into yourself (internal rather than external). This internal focus should give you the patience, persistence and courage to pursue more creative solutions to wider issues you may have.

This creativity lies at the CORE of the all the "luminaries" we've seen using "commonplace" systems. They're basically MAPPING what worked - and what didn't. The stuff that worked typically went into new products.

The Introduction Of A "Digital" Commonplace

To this end, when you look at why a "digital" commonplace may be effective, there are a number of considerations.

Firstly, the whole point of a "commonplace" was not to create a pretty book - it's to organize your thoughts into SYSTEMS that can be replicated, optimized, shared and combined.

The systems which worked "for you" would then end up being either used in the creation of better quality work, or shared with others. This is why the likes of Isaac Newton were revered; they took ideas themselves, experimented with them and used them to develop their own.

Secondly, the reason why so many "luminaries" ended up using "commonplace" methods was because it's primarily a mindset - born of you trying NEW ideas and engaging in new opportunities. Without this mindset, keeping a "commonplace" would be worthless, as the stuff you'd put into it would be nondescript.

All of this means that if you're looking at building a new type of "digital" commonplace, you need to be able to capture this concept as honestly as possible. This is where most people fail - typically designing a "note taking app", which has not only been done, but is not actually what a "commonplace" is about anyway.
