Rock Orinted Suggestions For A New College Basketball Tournament Theme

Bob Christian enjoyed a ten year playing career in basketball, a six-ten center who starred at Grambling State in the late sixties and was selected in the 1969 draft. He spent his first two seasons in the American Basketball Association with the Dallas Chaparrals and the New York Nets, but spent the rest of his career in the NBA with the Atlanta Hawks and Phoenix Suns.

Even though Christian has the distinction of being drafted with fellow center Kareem Abdul Jabbar of UCLA, it was similarly named Bob Christianson who has left a far bigger legacy to the sport he never played. His contribution becomes very important each March, even though most people do not even recognize his name.

The composer became a little more well-known recently, when The New York Times on March 31 published a feature on Christianson. He came up with the theme 25 years ago, crediting its basketball popularity to the fact that it had a simple melody but a lot of energy.

The article states that Christianson's theme also works because of its timing. There are 168 beats per minute just like the human heart, according to composer James Kellaris. He studies music besides teaching marketing at the University of Cincinnati, which happens to be one of the few teams that has reached the tournament for seven straight years.

Had the college basketball commissioners desired a theme resembling popular rock rather than classical, they could have chosen from already well-known hits with connections to the annual tournament to determine the college basketball champion. Here are five of those tunes.

Madness by Elton John

This title is synonymous with college basketball in March, and it is the highlight of Sir Elton's A Single Man, his first album without long time songwriting partner Bernie Taupin.

When I'm 64 by The Beatles

Every bracket starts out with exactly 64 blank lines, and each ends with all but one of the teams being crossed out.

Sole Survivor by Asia

After six rounds in three weekends, one college finally earns the distinction of this song from the debut album of the eighties supergroup.

The Ole College Try by L.E.O

An old expression in the chorus of a modern song, from the Jeff Lynne-produced Alpacas Orgling album, could be a great complement piece to the current theme.

Cinderella by Firefall

Everybody roots for the neglected stepsister of the higher seed to upset a perennial powerhouse, so this hit by the band who recorded "Strange Way" and "Just Remember I Love You" would fit nicely as a theme for the annual tournament.
