Choosing Your Destination

Choosing Your Destination

By Paxton Hutchens

Once you have decided you are ready to take trip, whether it is your first international trip or another you're adding to a long list of previous destinations, you will be faced with the task of deciding where you want to go. This can be a hard thing to do. The world is massive and there are so, so many different choices. I always struggle trying to decide where I would like to visit next and to be honest, sometimes the answer changes. It all just kind of depends what your interests have been in lately and what's really calling out to you. This page will list a few different techniques you can use to help you decide where you want to go next or at least help you to narrow it down.

Budget: It's always important to consider your budget. As fun and exciting as it may be, international travel does not come cheap. Make sure you have planned well in advance and have been saving for your next adventure. It's almost important to budget a little extra money for things you maybe hadn't thought about. Always make sure you can afford a few extra nights in a hotel and some extra meals just in case something doesn't go as planned. It's also important to consider your list of countries when talking about budgeting. Different parts of the world are a lot more expensive than others. You're going to spend a lot more money if you are traveling to Europe than if you are traveling to South America. Cost of living is different everywhere you go. Flights will also have different pricing depending on your destination. Make sure you think about what you will be spending money and be honest when making your budget.

Time: Time constraints are another thing to think about. How long do you want to be gone? How much time can you take off work or school? Are you traveling with others who are working with a time constraint? Consider how much time you are dealing with and plan accordingly. If you only have about 5 days I wouldn't suggest taking off to Australia. If you have a shorter period of time choose somewhere close to home with less traveling time and a smaller country that you can see more of in a small amount of time. While the nonstop exploring of traveling can be fun it it's fun to try and fit too much in too little time. Make sure you give yourself enough time to enjoy what you are doing.
